Another for your list: Peter Greenaway’s A ZED AND TWO NOUGHTS featuring twin zoologists (with the oh-did-you-really surname of Deuce) obsessed with natural decay, their personal experiments and fetishes, and a very large cast of snails. (Also, right-wing comedian Jim Davidson plays a zookeeper.) It is pretentious-arthouse-80s to the max and I think it’s still streaming on Mubi.
‘I remember my mother laughing at the birth scenes in which Phoebe looks, at most, mildly constipated.’ Heheh! I remember that too, Becky! Brilliant essay.
Great essay! After a quick scoot past gormenghast (Cora and Clarice were definitely in the uncanny valley) I’ve also consulted my media back catalogue and remember that I admired and enjoyed Luke and Leia in Star Wars - a dignified alliance of equals as played by Fisher and Hamill.
I had forgotten about Luke and Leia. Nice moment when Leia goes back to rescue Luke after Vader lops his hand off (yr twin will always be there for you!) A bit disappointed NOT to be psychic or able to talk through Force Powers, tbh xx
Yes I think it might be time for a re-read! I’m also keen to read ‘Toad’, her 1970s novel which was rejected at the time for having ‘unlikeable’ characters but has since been published and sounds pretty great to me. I’d be surprised if someone isn’t working on a collected edition of her works.

I adored Geek Love as well. Will have to reread it again soon, haven’t looked at it since entering adulthood.
